Wasn't that stupid?
I bumped manually, but if you have a macro editor you could set it up to run all night on your behalf. What would that prove? That you're even stupider than I am. |

Hey junior-- here's my post count from another forum I frequent:
Total Posts: 10,834 Funny thing is, I'm considered a junior there.... There are folks who easily have quadruple and quintiple what I have. Bob |

that post totals- absolute or relative- mean little to nothing, or in the case of my bumping demonstration, less than nothing. I consider my stunt to constitute a negative net contribution to the sum of knowledge in the universe, if only because some numb-nuts might be inspired to actually emulate it for other than ironic purposes.
On any forum it becomes clear right away who is there to help and who is just baggage. Oddly, both types tend to rack up post totals pretty quickly. |

And that is what I meant by my distiction between the worker bees and the drones. Thing is, post totals aren't how you tell them apart.
In fact, I would say that a single well-researched essay with pictures and appropriate links to further information or authorities carries more weight than five hundred insipid 'I was just wondering' queries or ten thousand 'that was great!' comments. And no disparagment of your post total elsewhere was intended. How indeed could I evaluate it, not having seen it? My derision is wholly reserved for those who think that becoming a Member, or a Maximum Member Supemo in Excelcius in itself is a badge of distinction. That is why I posit that anyone who would set up a macro to run up their post total is even stupider than my own stupid demonstration. Stupid is as stupid does. Oh, and by the way- you can count on it that I won't be using this technique anywhere other than this thread, and if I do see someone blatantly post-whoring I'm as likely as not to call them on it and refer them here for a motivation check. |

It wouldn't tear me up if post totals were suppressed altogether, or in the alternative, if they were only available with a small bit of work- like drilling down to the users' contact or member list information.
The reason I say that is that while it has not happened here -yet- I believe based on experience that sooner or later some people will argue that their post total, or someone's they support total, entitles them to greater credibility, respect or consideration. It's bogus and divisive. Because the post total is accorded an (unwarranted) prominence in the interface design, I think users are swayed to regard it as an Important bit of information. It wouldn't be so in-your-face if it were not important, would it? As if. At the moment I am writing this, the user with the highest post total (other than Administrators) has fifty-two posts. If you examine his oeuve, the overwhelming majority could be classified as sub-literate at best. There are a few that consist of a sentence or sentence fragment. Some do not even have a single word from the English language in them. His favorite essay consists of the single expression 'eek'. Now, I am not suggesting any kind of discipline be imposed on this user; his overall uselessness is its own punishment as far as I am concerned , and my intention is not to hold him personally up for ridicule or pick a quarrel. He is simply an example, an object lesson. I applaud your decision to take one lever for post-total pecker-matching out of play. I wish it could be extended farther.
