Thread: Gilt strap spring bars

    Default Gilt strap spring bars

I was changing the strap on my gold-plated Smiths 'Mercury' (21J Ingersoll/Smiths TY) and was surprised to see it was gilt ('was' - it's hiding in the carpet somewhere)!

Never seen a gilt spring-bar before. Are these common?

Why on earth have 18ct pins which can't be seen? Muggers beware!

I repaired a rolled-gold Omega bumper recently which appeared to have the original strap and gold-plated strap bars. It's important for when the lugs are fully drilled as you can see the ends of the bars. These strap bars must have had a heavy plate as there was no wear whatsoever.

I can understand the logic, Roddy, but on an 'umble 6 Welsh-made Smiths/Ingersoll? Albeit it does have drilled through holes. A dollop of Humbrol would have sufficed... :-)

That's a not so 'umble pukka Smiths auto job in a solid gold case at 46/10/6d vs the Smiffs/Ingersoll TY at 120 bob!
