Thread: Precista MoD divers watches

    Default Precista MoD divers watches

While the CWC watches have endured largely unchanged over the years I was pondering how the 88, 89 and 93 Precista watches evolved. The dial on the 88 and 89s are quite different to each other and the 93 seems to be a completely different watch. Does anyone have any idea why this would be? Why would Precista design a whole new watch for 93 - and why did they then not get subsequent years in orders from the MoD? If there were only 300 93s then it must be one of the shortest contract runs ever. Did Precista make civvy watches too at the same time?

It MAY have something to do with the sporadic nature of their contracts, squeezing the odd order in when CWC wasn't supplying. Also consider that CWC has a dedicated case supplier/parts supplier and I never got that impression from Precista..more whatever was current off the shelf models which may also explain the inconsistency.. Note as evidence, that Tutima also carried virtually the same 88 & 89 model watches..and I have seen plain-jane civi watches branded Precista.. Eddie over at Timefactors who owns the name, may have something more to add about this..

My impression is that Precista were stop-gap suppliers (hence the 82) but Eddie Platts will know.

I do not believe that Eddie owned the name Precista when these watches were supplied to the MoD.

I think not also, but he might well know. Or someone on his forum, lot of Precista fans there.

Now, Southern Watch & Clock Supplies are known to be have been involved with the MoD timepieces - likely with spares, servicing and redialing before anything else. It doesn't take a leap of faith to see them supplying a batch of diver watches on a stop gap basis, that led to the G10 orders ?

Thought about the G10 watches, exactly the same as the CWCs other than the dial ?

For those that are not familiar with the name - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Armstrong_Siddeley

Eddie is simply re-registering iconic names from the past and re-using them for his brand names.

Umm . . . is that good? Or bad? I've had a few of his watches (still got the PRS-82, re-issue of the 1982 Precista) and they seem like very decent bits of kit to me. Unless you've had other experiences or difference opinions? YMMV and all that. But I'd buy from him again.

He is simply reviving the names, so it is what is. I don't believe that he claims any heritage or association to the original owners or products.

Looks like Mr Platts just can't market cars or t-shirts with Armstrong-Siddeley on them and the Owner's Club can't market watches or clocks.....

Thanks for the replies chaps - notwithstanding the perfectly decent and legitimate (in my view) Timefactors reboots, are there any more people with understanding/knowledge of Precista and the MoD years at all? Interest to see in Lambstew's thoughts on the Tutima watches. Did Precista make any other models? Was the '93 ever sold under a different name? Are there any books with information on the MoD divers watches?

It strikes me that most of the knowledge displayed online is very expert in the watches 'as is' and 'as issued' but little seems to be known, or at least passed on, about the companies behind them and what went on.

In the case of Precista/Southern Watch & Clock Supplies, they were a small privately owned company. Unless you met an ex-employee or come across the company (or MoD) records or archive, it is highly unlikely that a great deal will be known about them and their dealings with the MoD.
