    Question Military Smiths De Luxe

I have been attempting to learn about Australian issued military watches in general and have found very little information on the elusive Smiths De Luxe. Searching through old threads I have found the following serial numbers. If anybody has any info or knows of any other serial numbers could they please post or email me the details?

    221/61
    247/61

    Default I don't know much

but I'm pretty sure not all those markings you listed refer to Australian issue watches. there might be some British issue amongst them.

    Default Hi Rebus

Of the Smith Deluxe you've listed, only those with an issue date of 1961 are Australian issue.

It is currently believed these were issued to Observers (Navigators) of the RAN's Fleet Air Arm. This however, has yet to be confirmed.

All the 1961 Aussie issue Smith Deluxe watches have a Thin Arrow on the dial the following 13 figure STANAG stock number on the back 6645-66-010-6032.

In addition to the six serial numbers you've listed, I'm aware of two more:

    No 243/61, and
    No 556/61.

No watch with a serial number of 600 has yet to be found.

    Kind regards

    Chris

Thanks bobsy and Chris in Melbourne. I was aware of the TAs being the Australian version but thought I'd include all serial numbers I found references to.

    Default Smiths DeLuxe Series

I was having a browse over my list of Smiths Deluxe watches tonight and offer the following for discussion.

    12619/56 - Can be seen in Imai's Page 340
12777/56 - Can be seen in Knirim's British Military Timepieces Page 694

1819/56 seems to be a random number, could it have been 12819/56?

I'm taking a punt here but it looks like the Australian series Issue No's. 182/61 to 556/61 follow on from the UK D.O.S. series 111/60 - 146/60.

BN 36 - Lead me to Australia's 36th Battalion St. George's English Rifle Regiment but it was disbanded in 1945, so there is no connection there.

AWRE - Atomic Weapons Research Establishment

Can someone post images of AWRE W330 and W809 please?

    Thanks,

    Terry

Terry 1819/56 is from this thread http://www.mwrforum.net/forums/showt...ghlight=smiths and I like your theory on the D.O.S serial numbers.

12789/56 is for sale on James Dowling's site -- looks like a previously unknown example (or at least not recorded here)

Interestingly it has the original radium dial, no circle T

I just realised I had the 1960 SDLs under the wrong heading, which has now changed from FA/TA to UK/AUS as 155/61 is an AUS FA.

Interesting that Smiths seem to have gone just with a date code [618 = yy/m] on the movement, rather than a sequential serial number. Still, at least it's the right movement. Also, no circle T and closed 6 & 9 -- is that a radium dial?

Be interesting to see what it goes for, lots of interest already.
